Island View High School

November 3rd, 2020

• This year our school is supporting and celebrating Remembrance Day on Tuesday, November 10th. We will not be able to meet in the gymnasium as a school wide assembly this year due to Covid-19. However, we are broadcasting virtually in your classrooms a smaller version of the event on the 10th.

I want to thank all the teachers and volunteers who are supporting their school. We have students performing in the band, students performing drama skits, students participating in Cadets and teachers reading poems.

This year due to the pandemic, we have decided to place the Cenotaph in the West end of the building on the second floor. A Cenotaph is a memorial that honors a person or group of people buried somewhere else. The original and literal meaning of the word is “an empty tomb.”
This year, Mr. Fougere’s History 10 class decided to get involved in Remembrance Day by painting the name of a fallen soldier on a rock, the year they served and the year they passed away. These rocks will be placed around the Cenotaph throughout week.

Ms. Perry will be placing Remembrance Day Art on the second floor and around the Cenotaph throughout the week.

We are still asking all staff, students and community members to share pictures of family members who have either served or are currently serving in the Military and/or are first responders in our community (fire, police, paramedic, etc.) Please send all pictures to Graham Tuck at gtuck@gnspes.ca

Please talk to your teachers about Remembrance Day and how your class can participate in an activity around Remembrance Day to remember the importance of an event. There are limited supplies in the main office for classrooms.

Poppies are on sale in the main office and all proceeds go to support the local legions.
If any student wants to be a part of this year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony please see Mr. Smith today. We are still looking for singers.
