• African Heritage Month 2021 Fact:

Black people have been in Nova Scotia since the first permanent European settlement was established in Port Royal in 1605.  Explorer Mathieu DaCosta is credited with being the first recorded free black person to arrive on the territory of today’s Canada.  Today, 77.2% of the African Nova Scotia population are Canadians of three or more generations.
